Opportunities, challenges and development directions of electromagnetic exploration today

Electromagnetic exploration technology is one of the earliest and most widely used geophysical techniques, and it is also the closest exploration technology to seismic method. However, why is the gap between the development scale and technology level of electromagnetic exploration technology and earthquakes so large? It is of great significance to accelerate the de-velopment and application of electromagnetic exploration technology. By comparing the technical and economic characteristics of the two methods, this paper analyses the present situation, potential and opportunity of electromagnetic exploration technology in six fields, including oil and gas, deep mineral resources and water resources, further analyses the inherent limitations of elec-tromagnetic wave field in electromagnetic exploration technology, the insufficiency of the study of rock conductivity physical mechanism, and the problems of data acquisition, processing and interpretation technology in electromagnetic exploration, and points out these problems.
