Application of porous materials for the flow field in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Porous metals and carbonaceous materials have received increasing attention for application in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) as the porous flow fields/flow distributors due to the desirable properties such as high electrical conductivity, high porosity, controllable structure, and lightweight. Compared to the conventional ribbed flow distributor, the porous flow distributor has been validated to be a structure that can distribute reactant gases more evenly throughout the entire electrode area and deliver superior electrochemical performances of hydrogen PEMFCs. Also, the effect of the crucial structural/surficial properties of porous flow distributors and the operating conditions on the fuel cell performance in terms of power density, gas distribution, pressure drop, and water management, etc. are analyzed and summarized, providing a useful insight into their future development and optimization. Moreover, challenges in the performance stability of the porous metal flow distributor in the corrosive environment and recent progresses on the corrosion-resisting porous flow distributors are presented.
