Most of isolated resident islands rely largely on imported fresh water and fossil energy. Generally, the cost of transport these basic necessities is expensive and therefore limit the human activities on these islands. This paper proposes a model which uses renewable energy (solar and wind energy) to produce both electricity and fresh water for a 5.6 km2 island in the South China Sea. To mitigate the intermittency of natural renewable energy, the water desalination system was regarded as an energy storage facility. In order to make the energy-fresh water coupling system operating smoothly, a central control system was formulated. Reverse osmosis desalination method was used to produce fresh water. In order to figure out the most appropriate configuration of the system, HOMER model which was developed by NREL was used. The simulation results show that local solar power combined with near sea offshore wind power are sufficient to make energy and fresh water self-dependent of the target island. This study also reveal that energy storage facility is the most critical components of the system. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
