Manipulating the Edge of a Two-Dimensional MgO Nanoisland

We investigate the morphology evolution and electronic properties of MgO islands grown on the Ag(001) substrate by the reactive deposition method using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (LT-STM/STS) and low-energy electron diffraction. By pushing the Mg/O-2 ratio to the Mg-rich limit, we observe an edge transformation from the nonpolar to the polar edge, implying a completely different ion arrangement in the edge. We ascribe it to the excess Mg atoms which remain after this surface chemical reaction process. The residual Mg occupying the substitutional sites of the underlying Ag substrate contributes to the further reduction of the surface work function. More intriguingly, STS measurement reveals the abrupt disappearance of the surface state at the edge of polar-edge MgO islands. Our study provides a reliable approach to manipulate the edges of metal-oxide nanostructures.
