Strategy for simultaneous multi-scalar imaging in turbulent NH3/H2 premixed flames using a single laser system

In this communication, we propose a simplified laser diagnostic approach to simultaneously visualize three key scalars (i.e., NH, NH, and Rayleigh scattering signals) in turbulent premixed NH/H/air flames using a single Nd: YAG-pumped-dye-laser system for the first time. It is proposed that two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) of NH, as well as single-photon LIF of NH, can be co-excited at 304.79 nm, providing an excellent signal-to-noise ratio for both scalars. Rayleigh scattering measurements were performed at the same wavelength, taking the advantage of the higher Rayleigh cross-section at shorter wavelength. The development of such diagnostic strategy eases the complexities in optical arrangement, synchronization, and flat-field corrections, and more importantly makes multi-scalar measurements affordable to be coupled with other diagnostic techniques such as particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) and/or OH-/NO-PLIF, which would provide critical information for the studies of NH/H turbulent combustion.
