In this paper, a novel structure of a miniaturized circularly polarized planar antenna is presented. The radiator consists of a feed line with two stubs opposed with respect to each other and a ground plane with two elliptical slots and two rectangular notches between them. The right-hand side stub of the feed is loaded with a low impedance line. This allows obtaining substantial axial-ratio (AR) improvement while ensuring acceptable in-band reflection of the antenna. The geometry parameters of the structure are rigorously optimized in order to obtain the best possible AR within 5 GHz to 7 GHz frequency range while ensuring acceptable matching (|S11| = -10 dB) over the same bandwidth. The final design features a small size of only 17.3 mm × 17.7 mm (footprint of 306 mm), maximum in-band AR of only 1.3 dB, and 3dB AR bandwidth of 4.54 GHz to 7.15 GHz.
