Pressure sensors are basic blocks for the construction of many electronic systems. However, traditional pressure sensor devices based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), most of which are based on silicon substrates, have limited mechanical flexibility and pressure sensitivity, which make them unsuitable for many portable and wearable applications. Hence, the development of flexible polymer nanocomposite based pressure sensors is attracting much more interest for their applications in healthcare monitoring, human-robotic interaction, and e-skin. In this chapter, we first introduce the parameters for pressure sensors. Then, we present examples of fabrication processes for three prevalent types of polymer nanocomposite based pressure sensors: capacitive, piezoresistive, and piezoelectric sensors. We mainly focus on piezoresistive sensors and briefly introduce capacitive and piezoelectric pressure sensors owing to the advantages of piezoresistive sensors in easier fabrication and less stringent electrical configurations. We provide a more detailed overview of state-of-the-art piezoresistive pressure sensors, followed by characterization of specific flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors and their applications in healthcare monitoring, texture roughness detection, and artificial skin. We have also included a table to summarize and compare the performance of many reported polymer nanocomposite based pressure sensors before providing conclusive remarks at the end of this chapter.
