This paper reviews the use of complex reflection zeros (CRZs) in synthesis process to achieve “in-between” filters with additional benefits in physical implementation. CRZs bring more flexibilities to enable the satisfaction of physical constraints of diverse non-conventional filter topologies. With the added CRZs, the filters will present non-ideal in-between responses deviating from standard filter functions. Three applications of CRZs are reviewed: generalized strongly coupled resonator triplet (GSCRT) filters, inline extracted-zero filters, and inline path filters. Their in-between responses are analyzed and compared to guide a trade-off between electrical performance and physical layout.
