Biodegradable micro-nanofiber medical tape with antibacterial and unidirectional moisture permeability

The widespread use of medical tapes in healthcare settings poses challenges related to cross-contamination, incidents resulting from improper usage, and environmental pollution caused by the accumulation and disposal of medical waste. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a antibacterial and biodegradable medical tape. Herein, an antibacterial and biodegradable medical tape has been demonstrated to address these problems. The novel approach involves the synthesis of a series of high molecular weight polypropylene carbonate (PPC) elastomers combined with antibacterial agents like benzalkonium bromide to enhance bacterial growth resistance and prevent cross-contamination. The integration of the electrospinning technique enables the production of micro-nano fiber membranes with excellent breathability and moisture permeability. The newly developed antibacterial micro-nano medical tape (AMMT) demonstrates superior breathability (43.07 mm·s, 1.2 times to similar commercial products from 3 M), moisture permeability (6,589.40 g·m·d), and skin-friendliness. Furthermore, the outstanding antibacterial performance of this tape, with a 100% antibacterial rate, combined with its biodegradability, positions it as a highly promising material for applications in medical dressings and tissue engineering.
