In recent years, adsorption has been viewed as one of the most effective and promising wastewater treatment technologies, whereby the development of adsorbents plays a pivotal role. Among the variety of adsorbents developed by far, nanocomposite hydrogels stand out owing to their excellent adsorption performances encompassing large adsorption capacity, superb water affinity, easy preparation, wide tunability, recyclability, and robust mechanical properties. In this chapter, we discuss the recent progress of nanocomposite hydrogels for water contaminant adsorption, by elaborating the basic materials design principles and synthesis strategies and summarizing the mechanical properties along with a brief introduction regarding the mechanical characterization methods and the associated mechanics. The main advances related to the use of nanocomposite hydrogels containing different fillers for adsorbing various pollutants including heavy metals, toxic dyes, antibiotics, and others, as well as the adsorption kinetic, isotherm, regeneration abilities, and related mechanisms are briefly reviewed.
