Macro Co-Al-W-based superalloy single-crystal fabrication using selective laser melting

In the current work, a type of Co-Al-W-based superalloy was fabricated via selective laser melting. The samples were processed using two laser beam systems with different groups of processing parameters. The first group produced a polycrystalline microstructure, while a macro-scale single crystal (a cylinder of 2 mm diameter and 5 mm height) was first achieved by the second group. The high stability of the melt pool and the lower flow rate of molten material under the second group of processing parameters were the key factors for the formation of a single crystal, which was revealed by the numerical analysis. Compared with the polycrystalline microstructure, the sample with single-crystal microstructure had a higher hardness and compression yield strength in the room-temperature nanoindentation tests.
