Strength-based collaborative topology optimization for continuous fiber reinforced composites

The diverse and complex failure modes of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites impose a significant challenge on optimization of both structural topology and fiber path. This study aims to develop a novel strength-based collaborative optimization of topological layout and fiber path (namely SCOTF) for continuous fiber reinforced composite structures through a level set algorithm with a parameterized stream function. The level set function for characterizing structural topology and the stream function for portraying fiber path are decomposed into a sum of weights associated with a series of radial basis functions. In this approach, the weights are treated as design variables to update the topological layout and fiber path of CFRP structure. To enhance mechanical strength, the design objective is established in terms of the Tsai-Wu strength criterion with mathematical derivation of analytical sensitivity. The effectiveness and reliability of SCOTF are demonstrated by three illustrative examples to compare with other two conventional methods, namely a maximum principal stress-based fiber placement and a stiffness-based design. In comparison, the structural strength optimized by SCOTF increase by 28.9 % and 42.8 %, respectively, proving that SCOTF can generate more effective topological layouts with smooth and continuous fiber paths, appreciably alleviating the concentration of failure index and lowering damage and failure of CFRP composite structures. The proposed approach is anticipated to provide a new tool for the strength-based design of fiber reinforced plastic composite structures.
